One of the hardest experiences in prayer is speaking honestly and receiving no obvious response. Silence can feel like absence. It may even seem to prove that prayer is pointless. Catholic faith offers a more demanding and more hopeful understanding.

Catholics believe God listens because prayer begins with His invitation and takes place within a real relationship with Him. Silence does not mean failure. At times the answer comes later than expected. It may also arrive in a form you did not ask for, or as strength to endure rather than escape. Christians should not treat every feeling or coincidence as a private message, but they can trust that sincere prayer is never wasted.

Many people expect God to answer like a notification: quickly and without ambiguity. God often works through ordinary means instead. A passage of Scripture may expose something you have avoided.
