Catholics pray to Mary because they believe the saints remain alive in Christ and can intercede for the Church on earth. In this context, prayer means asking. Catholics worship God alone and pray directly to Jesus, while also asking Mary to pray with them and for them.
Direct answer
Catholics pray to Mary by asking for her intercession. They do not believe she is divine or equal to Jesus. She is not the source of salvation. Worship belongs to God alone. Marian prayer is therefore understood as the same basic act involved when one Christian asks another to pray, except that it takes place within the communion of saints. Authentic devotion to Mary always leads back to Christ.

What this really means
Much of the confusion comes from the word prayer. In modern English it is often treated as another word for worship, but historically it can also mean a request. Catholic teaching therefore distinguishes adoration, which belongs only to God, from the honour shown to the saints. Mary receives a unique honour because she is the Mother of Jesus. Her importance comes entirely from her relationship with Him. She accepted God's call, gave herself freely to His will and remained faithful to Christ throughout His life.

At Cana, Mary brings a human need to Jesus and tells the servants to obey Him. Luke records that she is blessed among women and that future generations will call her blessed. Revelation portrays heavenly figures presenting the prayers of the saints before God. Catholics see these passages as consistent with asking for heavenly intercession.

The Catechism teaches that the saints intercede for the Church. Mary's maternal role depends completely on Christ and never competes with Him. Devotion to her is therefore fundamentally different from the adoration offered to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Catholics should always remain rooted in direct prayer to God. Asking Mary to pray can accompany that relationship, but it must never replace it. The Hail Mary begins with words drawn from Luke's Gospel before asking for her intercession. The Rosary reflects on the life of Jesus. Any devotion that treats Mary as a rival to Christ or imagines that she is more merciful than He is has departed from Catholic teaching.
For believers
Let devotion to Mary make you more obedient to Christ and more attentive to Scripture. Her clearest instruction remains the one she gave at Cana: do whatever Jesus tells you.
For seekers
Begin with the distinction between worship and intercession. Catholics do not place Mary on the level of God. They believe the family of Christ remains united across death and that asking Mary to pray belongs within that communion.
Reflection
Mary is honoured because God gave her a unique place in the life of Christ. Her proper role is always to direct attention back to her Son.

01Do Catholics worship Mary?+
No. Catholics worship the Father, Son and Holy Spirit alone. Mary is honoured as the Mother of Jesus and as a faithful disciple, but she remains a creature and is never treated as God.
02Why pray to Mary instead of going directly to Jesus?+
Catholics do go directly to Jesus. Asking Mary to pray does not replace personal prayer to Christ, just as asking a Christian friend for prayer does not prevent someone from praying on their own.

Veneration is honour shown to a holy person because of what God's grace has accomplished in that life. Worship is the complete self-offering owed to God alone. Catholic teaching treats them as different acts, not as stronger and weaker versions of the same thing.
