Prayer to St Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Why Catholics pray it

Why it matters

Scripture depicts Michael fighting against evil, and Catholic teaching recognises angels as servants of God who assist the Church. Catholics therefore ask St Michael to intercede and help them resist evil while recognising that victory and authority ultimately belong to God.

When to pray

When Catholics use it

The prayer can be used privately at any time, especially during temptation, fear or spiritual struggle. Some Catholic parishes also pray it together after Mass as a devotion, although it is not a required conclusion to the Mass.

Meaning

What the words mean

The prayer uses the language of spiritual battle. It asks Michael for defence while directly acknowledging that the power by which evil is defeated belongs to God.

History

Where this prayer comes from

The familiar short Prayer to St Michael is associated with Pope Leo XIII and the late nineteenth-century Leonine Prayers. Stories claiming to describe a dramatic private vision behind its composition are widely repeated, but the prayer's devotional value does not depend on treating every later origin story as established history.
