A daily Catholic rhythm of prayer

You do not need an enormous prayer routine. Begin with a few deliberate moments that return your attention to God throughout the day.

In brief

A useful Catholic prayer routine is not about filling every spare minute with formulas. It is about returning to God regularly enough that prayer begins to shape the rest of the day.

Start here

A simple three-part routine

If you are starting again, three short moments are enough. A simple routine prayed faithfully is better than an ambitious routine that is difficult to sustain.

During the Easter season, Catholic tradition normally uses the Regina Caeli in place of the Angelus.

Build a rhythm

Prayer through the day

These are useful devotional moments, not a checklist of private prayers every Catholic is obliged to complete.

Midday

Pause and remember the Incarnation

The middle of the day is a traditional moment to stop briefly and remember that the Word became flesh.

Meals

Receive ordinary gifts with gratitude

Food is ordinary enough to be taken for granted, which is precisely why it makes a useful daily school of gratitude.

A useful distinction

Devotion is not obligation

Personal routines such as a Morning Offering, Angelus or night examination of conscience can be excellent Catholic practices. They should not be presented as though every private devotion were a universal command of the Church.

Keep it sustainable

More prayer is not always better prayer

A smaller routine prayed attentively is normally more useful than an elaborate schedule rushed mechanically or abandoned after a few days. Prayer should train attention toward God, not become another task to measure and complete.
